Efficient and competent laboratory testing service is an essential component of the integrated standardization activity. Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) Act No 6 of 1984 has provisions for the establishment and maintenance of laboratory services to promote Standardization, Quality Assurance and other related activities in industry and commerce at national level. Laboratory Services Division of SLSI is the first national laboratory established for the above purpose and it offers comprehensive laboratory related services such as;

  • Compliance testing for a wide spectrum of consumer products and materials,
  • Technical training on laboratory testing, general laboratory practices and quality control activities, etc.

Presently, the Laboratory Services Division provides efficient and reliable services for the public and private sector organizations to promote activities in Industry and Commerce through six unit testing laboratories. They are,

  • Chemical laboratory
  • Electrical & Electronics laboratory
  • Food laboratory
  • Materials laboratory
  • Microbiology laboratory and
  • Textile laboratory

SLSI laboratories are equipped with modern and reliable test facilities. This enhance the laboratory related activities including testing of extensive spectrum of products, commodities and materials in accordance with national and international standards. It is manned with well competent staff specialized in their respective disciplines and exposed to frequent training, both locally and internationally. Almost all the scientists are postgraduate degree holders in relevant disciplines. The test facilities now available are upgraded regularly to incorporate national and international development.

The Laboratory Services Division has developed its processes conforming to the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025: 2017; General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. Several testing services offered by Chemical, Microbiology, Food and Electrical & Electronics Laboratories are complying with the standard requirements of ISO/IEC 17025 and accredited by Sri Lanka Accreditation Board for Conformity Assessments (SLAB).

Accreditation status ensures the competence of laboratory testing processes to generate reliable and accurate test results. Test reports issued by accredited laboratories are internationally recognized through ILAC-MRA (International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation - Mutual Recognition Agreement) with SLAB.
